What can I do at work to overhaul the time?

I am working a 40 hour week, but there is only give or take a few 20+ hours of work to do while I am here. Anything I can do that will pass the time? My boss wants me here to answer the phones, customers, etc. so they are OK near me doing whatever I can to pass the time while on the clock.

Please no comedy answers either. Right now, I read, do crossword puzzles, lurk on YA and surf the internet, and verbs my office. But these are getting old and boring. I am not a enormously crafty person so needlepoint and such doesnt interest me.

Thanks!

Ask your boss to give you stuff to do. Or ask your co-workers if they have any projects they want help on. I'm sure someone in the department would be more than happy to pass on a small project to you if it process relieving some stress of their backs so that they can work on bigger projects.

I have equal problem at work occasionally. We always go to our contribution shop and ask if we can help price new merchandise, or brand name up gift bags for arts school groups and birthday party groups. It helps to pass by the time, and assists our gift shop staff with their merchandising.

Or, if you are taking classes, you could other bring your homework in and do that while you're working. Nothing like earn money being bored!

Well I am resentful of you! That is awesome you have time to yourself that way. Around Christmas time you could do your Christmas cards. In the tight time, maybe write letters to friends/family you haven't be in contact with lately, be a foil for your checkbook or pick up some books from the library.

Any counsel?

Look around your office. Is within a filing system that is widespread? Maybe it needs straightning or maybe it wishes a complete make-over. Go through the company email system and get rid of old address and junk email. I don't know what business you are in but could you free up time for push button employees by doing their copying, filing, faxing...? Could you sort the correspondence and distribute it?

Ask if you can make follow-up calls to see if the customer is contented or confirm appointments.

My point here is don't look for a new chatroom or take up Sudoku. Do something that help your employer. He/she is paying you for 40 hours, you owe them 40 hours of work.

And, you make yourself more valuable to the company as you demonstrate initiative, get-up-and-go, self-direction and a great work ethic. Many people have literally made themself indisposable by doing these type things. That is employment security.

Update: Should I quit my post?

This is what all great admin troop support people do;
1. Look for ways to take workload from your bosses and doing the work so that they dream up they have done it but know you really did do it.
2. Research other companies and look at competitiveness, processes, value added strategies.
3. Create the process instruction manual for the entire company.

LOL... that totally discribes my old position! How fun. Some days I really miss it!

I used to play a lot of games... including crosswords online on MSN. I would go through closets at home/kids stuff and variety ads on ebay or craigs list to put on the market them (time consuming at first). I spent a lot of time figuring out things to buy for kids birthdays, deputation planning, go to Michaels.com and get crafty philosophy. And I started making cards... you can start making Xmas cards or a holiday letter. Also editing pictures is fun on snapfish.com... bring in a CD of kids pictures and nouns them onto the website then make them adjectives pretty and get some fun gifts for grandparents. Oh, and make your own cookbook from websites close to allrecipes.com and recipe.com... I would print and laminate my fav's and then organize them within a recipe holder... that took awhile.

Have fun!
