My mother is a traveling nurse practitioner. i spent my childhood going to work with her, it wasn't appealing. I hold many friends and acquaintances in the medical grazing land and from my own personal poll i find that they are all stressed ! My mother never really enjoyed it and i enjoy to say that i hate nursing homes. From experience working near newborns right out of school is wonderful but unrealistic. The life of an RN is not a glamorous one and not everything like working beside newborns is fun. People in this business seize jealous, and can be knifing. i craving you the best in your new job, many people do love their profession but unlike most jobs there is a ton more stress because you dealing near peoples health and their families emotion . good luck!
oh and yes most RNs generally verbs 12 hour shifts especially in the beginning of their profession.
my mother worked various jobs from the ER doing crazy around the cock hours, to OB -GYN, kinfolk practice, and now general practice which you wont find unbelievably often anymore but she tends to do job in remote areas.
if your gonna make form care your career you should verbs to go to school. when your of late a nurse your whole life it get demanding, your gonna be asking for a pay raise for adjectives the junk you gotta put up with !

Not all places do 12 hour shifts. Most places offer diverse 8, 10, or 12 hour shifts (you apply for the jobs which have the hours you want - you cannot be forced to work 12 hours).
Working next to newborns as a new grad isn't very hard to get into, but you won't be working only just with the newborns. Since at the moment newborns don't stay in the nursery adjectives day long and spend virtually all of the time contained by the family's room, you are a nurse to both the postpartum mother and the baby. This is called any a maternal newborn nurse or a postpartum nurse. Some facilities are more selective contained by hiring than others, and might want a new grad to have some experience surrounded by a regular medical / surgical unit to have a moral foundation of assessment skills. Others will hire new grads right in, it a short time ago depends.
As for stressful, every day is different. It can be feast or famine, so to speak. One daylight you might have wished you brought a book to work to read and other days you're a short time ago praying for it to end because you're so busy and stressed out and having a sturdy time meeting all of your patients' requests in a timely fashion. Or, fruitless things happen. I can't tell you how startling it is to find a blue baby in a crib, not breathing, the mother standing here screaming at you to save her child and not let her kid die. Stuff like that might not happen normally, but it can and does happen, and when it does, it really can be traumatic.
I work in giant risk obstetrics - antepartum, labor & delivery, as well as a moment or two maternal newborn when they need me. Since I know I was being hired into a glorious risk facility, I knew it would be inherently more stressful. We have deeply of preterm deliveries. A lot of neonatal death. A lot of stillbirths. A lot of congential defect. But we have a lot of conventional stuff too. There's a balance.
In your nursing studies you will learn in the region of stress and how there are ways of effectively and functionally cope with stress, how to sanction your stressors and address them early before things receive out of control for you. Asking for help from others is huge. Being competent to set your limits and knowing when to step back. Being assertive. Those are adjectives things you learn how to do in lay down to keep stress to a level where on earth you can manage.
