if you are within the US, no one is hospitalized for a month anymore. Faking sounds like a markedly bad idea. What if you needed a doc's details and release back to work? You would be totally hosed; and if you took sick pay, could possibly be liable for prosecution. If you are quiting to move about on holiday--so be it & just do it.

Career fine-tuning..?

Most employers require some type of physicians memo to get reimbursed for sick time. You also cannot take FMLA time in need a physican's signature on the form.

Due to insurance issues, unless you have a significant accident requiring intensive concern and rehabilitation, it is doubtful you would be in the hospital over a week at most. The only long permanent status hospitalizations are involuntary psychiatric confinements. If you are found to be falsely claiming medical leave benefits you are liable for prosecution, and dependent on the amount of money it could be a felony.

best idea, no to hospital
jump to your dr and tell him you are depressed but don't want to harm your self or others and entail a month off for the meds to work
that way you find a medical leave

Under the FMLA you can take past its sell-by date to care for a sick reletive (parents, child, sibling)
A position will be held for you upon your return, however, it may not be the same position you have when you left
