I recently graduated from college and enjoy been contemplating going to law arts school for a long time. I work at a big law firm as a legal assistant currently, and it seem like the opportunities for lawyer are extremely sparse. There are several people I work with who hold J.D.'s but work as paralegals, analysts, and library managers. I think that if I go to law school I would want to support myself as a attorney, but it seems like the opportunity just aren't there any more unless you are surrounded by the top 10% of a well-known law university. Thoughts?

I think the answer depends on what nouns of the country you want to practice in after graduating. The flea market for lawyers is pretty flooded right now, and the cutback stinks, too. Once more baby boomers retire, the market will hopefully even itself out. I attend a directive school in the midwest, and friends of mine who are graduate this year are having trouble finding work in this region. Many are moving to other states resembling Florida, Arizona, Nevada and North Carolina, where there are more opportunity. And it is certainly not true that only the top 10% surrounded by well-known law school are presented with opportunities. Many of my peers at my midwest college are working at big firms. If you do well at any school, you can do like peas in a pod. Good luck!

Those who have J.D.s but have not however passed the bar examination (or moral part evaluation or professional responsibility examination) cannot practice law.

One who has a J.D. and works as a paralegal falls beneath one of these categories: (1) hasn't passed the bar exam; (2) be an attorney but is somehow not entitled to practice law [failure to pay envelope dues, be current in child support obligations, suspended from practicing regulation, and/or disbarred]; (3) practiced law but didn't like adjectives the headaches of being an attorney.

It is of course possible to support oneself as an attorney without graduating within the top 10% of a well-known law arts school. However, for those 6 figure starting incomes, you have to enjoy graduated from a top-tier law conservatory on the top (or you have to have connections at the sizeable law firms).
