Nobody should be subject to that big-hearted of treatment at work. In the UK your situation - depending on your length of service - would constitute constructive dismissal. You asked for help from HR but this did not work, and the continuing situation forced you to quit your job.
I would do what others hold suggested and get some legal warning. Sorry. Not spoken abuse. His opinion.
You have no other choice but to leave.
I HAVE A LEGAL QUESTION! PLEASE ANSWER!?
You don't enjoy a case. Your boss can be a jerk as long as he doesn't threaten or sexually stress out you. If that is really the extent of what he said that falls far short of "abuse" and you need to toughen up.
I don't know if the answers above are correct. I dream up you may have a case for quitting due to a hostile work environment. You entail to find a personal injury attorney who will take your case on a contingency argument.

Get out the phone book or look online for some good, reputable personal injury/employment lawyer.
I really do wish you good luck and hope everything turns out okay for you.
